Neat rows of lettuce, tomatoes, yellow waxbeans, green onions, cabbage and yellow squash were plantedeverywhere. Since the ingredients for the meals depended uponwhat was available in the cupboard and the garden, the homecooks really had to stretch their imaginations....

As you will see from the recipes below, the Brits certainly don't have the monopoly of this type of fare for the occasion:
REBANDAS DE CARNAVAL
This a great way to use up stale bread at any time.

Fancy Up Your Muffins
We introduced muffins to you last week and many of you bought our new Apple Oat Muffin Mix. Now we're going to tell you how to "fancy up" your muffins. We'll show you how to add a touch of orange to your muffins, put a fancy graham crumb topping on them, or top them with cream cheese. You can do this with your Apple Oat Muffins or a recipe of your choice.
First, for the orange muffins . . .
Here is a streusel topping mix that works well:
Orange Nut Streusel Topping
1/2 cup walnut pieces
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoon orange zest (the zest from one large orange)
1 tablespoon cold butter
This particular recipe is Phillipian. Here are the ingredients you need to make a meal for 2:
4-6 Chicken Thighs
3 cups of Vinegar
3 cups of Soy Sauce
Pinch of Garlic (Optional)
Rice (I use Uncle Ben's Instant Rice)
Warning: You can get very sick if you don't cook Poultry for at least one hour!!
1. Defrost the Chicken during the day.
2. Later in the afternoon, place both 3 cups vinegar and 3 cups soy sauce in a medium sized pan. Bring to a boil, and add chicken.
3. Turn the heat down to a simmer....
Straight Talk from a Comfort Foodie - Simpler Times
When it was unfolding, I never thought I lived in "simpler times". That would have described pioneer days, or the world prior to the industrial revolution. Simpler times would, one day, be John-Boy and the rest of the Walton gang having dinner with Grandma and Grandpa. I was a child of the sixties, a Kennedy baby, jaded by a revolution that was counter-culture and in full regalia by the time of the Moonwalk-the "where were you?" moment of my wonder years. We watched young soldiers in bloodied Technicolor and civil riots in black and white....
Limes were originally grown in Asia, introduced by the Arab traders to the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa and then brought to Americas by the Spanish and Portuguese explorers. They are a great source of vitamin C and their zesty flavor refreshes the palate. On a hot day, a frozen lime cooler is a real thirst quencher.
In a 5-to-6 cup blender add:
2 cups crushed ice
1/4 cup Rose's lime juice
1/2 cup diet or regular lemon-lime soda
1/4 cup sugar
1-6 oz. can frozen limeade
2 cans cold water from the limeade container
1 slice fresh lime, for a garnish
Put all the ingredients into a blender and set on high....
